The Department of Chemistry at Gurucharan University (erstwhile Gurucharan College) has a rich and inspiring history marked by dedication, perseverance, and academic excellence. Its origins are closely linked with the vision of the founder Principal, the late A.K. Chanda, who aspired to establish full-fledged faculties of Arts, Science, and Commerce to serve the students of Barak Valley and Southern Assam. Although infrastructural and financial constraints initially limited the college to Arts and Commerce, the dream of introducing science education was realized in 1949 through public support and generous donations, notably from the late philanthropist Daloo Ram Agarwala.
The science stream began with the first-year I.Sc. course, offering Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. The Department of Chemistry was founded by Prof. Umesh Chandra Das and was soon strengthened by dedicated educators and demonstrators who nurtured the subject under challenging conditions. Despite early staffing difficulties and temporary setbacks, the department steadily progressed through the commitment of its teachers and the support of the college administration.
A major milestone was achieved in 1954 with the introduction of the B.Sc. course in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The arrival of distinguished teachers—particularly Prof. B.K. Sinha, who served as Head of the Department for 35 years—brought stability, academic rigor, and a strong foundation for growth. Under his leadership, and with the contributions of eminent faculty members, the department expanded both in strength and reputation.
In 1962, the department introduced Honours courses in Chemistry, marking a significant advancement in academic offerings. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the department witnessed its "golden phase," with a full complement of eight lecturers and two demonstrators. This period was characterised by remarkable academic results, including multiple First Class Honours graduates, reflecting the high standards of teaching and mentorship.
Over the decades, the department has benefited from the dedicated service of numerous distinguished faculty members and laboratory staff whose collective efforts built a strong academic tradition. Their contributions ensured the consistent development of laboratory facilities, curriculum delivery, and student achievement. Like many academic institutions, the department experienced phases of transition due to retirements and staffing changes. However, under capable leadership and with the induction of new faculty members, it has continued to maintain academic continuity and uphold its legacy. Though government policy changes led to a reduction in sanctioned posts, the department adapted and sustained its teaching and academic activities.
Today, the Department of Chemistry stands as a testament to resilience, scholarly commitment, and institutional pride. It continues to function smoothly, guided by experienced faculty and supported by devoted laboratory personnel. The department remains committed to nurturing scientific temperament, academic excellence, and research orientation among its students.
With a glorious past, a resilient present, and a hopeful future, the Department of Chemistry at Gurucharan University proudly carries forward its tradition of excellence and service to higher education.
